Fabulous feature in the San Francisco Chronicle today. It's about a portrait exhibit at the Homeless Prenatal Program where I teach the Community Health Workers, such as the women featured in the story (I am in the background of the second photo, having just come out of class). In fact, I focused on Carrie for my story on HPP in The New York Times a few years ago. Reporting that story is how I met the magnificent Martha Ryan and fell in love with the organization.

The CHWs I am working with in creative writing class are preparing essays for display at the annual fundraiser in a few weeks. That has me hopping again after this strange interlude with the dreaded Shingles Zoster. I've missed weeks of work and am still dragging, so I'll be focusing on this project until we're finished.

It's  also my great pleasure to work with other employees, who are former clients, on professional writing such as case notes, letters, resumes, and school papers and applications. Never have I met a more extraordinary group of men and women. They enrich my life. And I am grateful to be a part of theirs.

what an amazing program! I've had the privilege of working with a similar program in my area, and I am continually amazed by the women who founded & run the organization and the women in the program changing their lives. Kudos to you for your work with them.

Best wishes for your continued recovery.

My good friend Susan is a doulah and yoga teacher there. It's a great program, and San Francisco should be proud of the work they do to help women in these circumstances put their lives together so they can create a future for their children. Cheers to you!

Thank you all. And yes, Karen, I believe I met her when I worked on the NYTs story! It's an amazing place. And we're getting our essays ready for the big fundraiser!!

While on the subject of giving back to the community and inspiring youth, we are hosting a young woman from Mexico City these next 10 days. She loves dance, so we are taking salsa lessons on Cinco de Mayo at a community dance center. On Sunday I found this most wonderful dance event: Ekatva - The Oneness Journey.

May we all find something within ourselves to inspire our fellow citizens.

What a great video. And what an inspiration and call to action Martha Ryan is. The statistic that in one year over 900 children were "no longer homeless" is heartening. Thanks for this post Laura and I hope the fundraiser is a huge success. Why not publish your NYT article here on your blog?

I liked the way you wrote it. You did not divert from the topic even once which I have not seen in many other writers.

I have also seen the portrait. It’s really cool. As you said it is always pleasure to work with co-workers who have same taste and creative. We feel always happy to be with good co-workers, but don’t expect all places to be same.
