I have covered many stories for the New York Times. Here are a few of my favorites...
Rita Gomez is a mover but not a shaker who has elevated the science of moving art to a, well art form, AT THE GETTY CENTER in Los Angeles. Down the street, the CONSERVATORS OF ANCIENT ARTat the Getty Villa in Malibu were busy with all the breakables in the back room. And Holy Zeus, what a room it was! Which reminds me to remind you to STAY OUT OF THE SUN! The Homeless Prenatal Program in San Francisco is a really sunny place where the YOGA CLASSES FOR HOMELESS PREGNANT WOMEN blew me away. I will always be grateful to these brave souls for sharing their space with me. Same goes for the NEONATAL NURSES who helped me with my own son. FAMILY STORIES are nice. But Non-Profits are my favorite beat because they involve the most humble, honest, and nice people a reporter can meet. It was my great pleasure to spend time in jail eating with these WOMEN INMATES LEARNING TO COOK ORGANIC FOOD. Another terrific San Francisco non-profit is LA COCINA an incubator site for entrepreneurs trying to launch their own food business. My photographer and I ate well on that story! Speaking of eating amazing food: there's this WILLY WONKA FACTORY. Which reminds me of refrigerators! How could I forget shivering in a walk-in freezer with Olafur Eliasson and his crazy ART CAR! Hello! Can you spell B-M-W! VROOM! or VARUUUMM! No, but I can spell I-C-N where I was both a mother and a volunteer forCRITICALLY ILL INFANTS. I covered many health stories in my career, but none garnered as much attention as thisPEDIATRIC EYE PROBLEM. Talk about vision, this GUARD AT ALCATRAZsaw history in the making during his years on The Rock. Just around the Bay, there is bravery, heartache and beauty in the hills of Marin where the MARINEMAMMAL RESCUEcenter people save and rehab wonderful sea creatures. And speaking of amazing, this NIGERIAN SURGEON understands suffering first hand and reaches out to those the world has forgotten. He's in good company with these amazing women who started a HOME AWAY FROM HOMEfor dying children. This company is HOT AND GREEN while a hip guy named Pankaj started a Silicon Valley company that is COOL AND GREEN. And while this ELEPHANT'S DOSHA may be dead, these OLD NURSESare just getting started. And lest you think I don't care about PIZZA, I do. In a big way!
