SCRIBD:  WHERE THE WORLD COMES TO READ...

Picture
Laura Novak Profile Page
In the autumn of 2009, I walked into a conference room in San Francisco and heard the word Scribd for the first time. A beautiful young woman who worked for the start-up social media/publishing platform company told stories of an amazing new world without boundaries and with endless possibility for sharing our documents and controlling our own work. I went home that night and told Mark and Max that I needed to "get vertical." They both laughed and asked me to pass the potatoes.

Two years later, I am one of the most subscribed-to female authors on the site. With more than 47,000 followers and 176,000 reads of my work, I have entered a community that only really hip, brave and smart young people could have envisioned. And what I have found is some amazing prose and poetry and friends across the world I never would have otherwise met. I have also made Scribd the repository for many of my New York Times articles, portions of my novel, a collection of my Good Men Project columns and a shelf for various other essays.

In October, 2010, I was invited to read at LIT CRAWL as part of a Scribd team of authors rocking Lit Quake. I prepared for it at these San Francisco OPEN MICS.

This piece, called THE RED PURSE, is a fun ride down memory lane of our years eating as a couple, then as a family with Max. From Four Star to Mac 'n Cheese.

THE TROUBLE WITH HARRY is a favorite of mine. An elegiac look at marriage, death and the true meaning of loss. There are a few balloons in it too.

I have a really cool kid whose
EXCLAMATION OF INDEPENDENCE is writ large in this piece featured on another Scribbler's blog.

My column, entitled  Manhood and Medicine started with this story about my personal hero, A GOOD MAN IN THE MAKING.

Next, came this essay on a KALEIDOSCOPE STEALTH NURSE.  And if you think that title is wild, you should read the essay.

Sex, Lives and Ileostomates garnered a lot of attention, and rightly so. Honesty, bravery and humor like this are rare.

But there's nothing like a 4,000 word piece on the penis and the FORESKIN RESTORATION MOVEMENT to keep the hits coming.

And what an honor it is to be the very first to win this wonderful award from this great group ... Scribd's VOICE OF THE WEEK.

Scribdcalls itself the place where the world comes to read. I call it the company that changed my life.
