Halloween Story: Guest Post by Barbara Alfaro

The house near the mountain was surrounded by unknown flowers. It was really a hut, the kind witches live in. My blouse was torn and my knees scraped from my fall on the road. The hut had a chimney. I hate chimneys because they remind me of Hansel and Gretel and concentration camps. What was peculiar about the little hut was that it had no door. The only way to enter it was through one of the three windows. All the windows were open. I climbed in and took bread and fruit from the wood table. In the corner of the room I saw a scythe leaning against the wall and to my horror, it moved without being touched. I left the small place as soon as I could and rushed through a valley of dark trees to find myself here.

Is this place really any better? The cuts on my knees are still bleeding, and the small blood drops seem to be sucked through the fallen leaves by the protruding root hairs of these horrid trees. Where to next???

I know, Duncan, it IS intriguing isn't it. Perhaps she leaves "here" and goes back to find out why the scythe moved on its own. Paranormal? Or a hand that reached out from behind a door, or through one of those other windows.

Thank you Barbara!! I love this piece - and the Halloween poems up on your own site!

And who lives in that strange house with no doors? Maybe someone who uses the scythe as the tool of the trade? Maybe someone who does not like mortals barging in and stealing bread and fruit from the table? Oh, oh, I'm afraid all the running in the world won't help! : ^ O
