Nothing Like a Good Juxtaposition...

5/9/2011

...to keep the conversation going!
Picture
Thanks to Prof. Brad Scharlott for providing us with this intriguing comparison.  A picture does indeed paint a thousand words. For the record I hate that tacky pink and red scarf and I wonder how much that diamond cost. That's all I have to add!

Speaking of intriguing....I am continually fascinated by the high number, the sheer volume, of visitors to this site who hail from Alaska:  Wasilla, Anchorage, and Juneau in particular, though other, smaller town-folk are stopping by as well. Be assured, you are not alone.

And I am curious as to why. I mean, who are you people? And what have you got to share?

Years ago, I worked with a wonderful journalist who would, on occasion, stop by my office, lean against the door frame and ask, "So, you got anything for me?"  That was code for he had something big - sheer gossip, mind you - and that I'd better have something to cough up too if I wanted to hear his dirt.

I've got a few good things coming my/your way for this blog. But I am reminded of the two people from Wasilla who have weighed in on the various blogs over the years. One woman wrote convincingly about Mrs. Palin's alleged 5th pregnancy, how she was in denial, didn't want the baby, did her best to cover for it, and perhaps worse. People jumped all over her, but I found her to be believable.

But then there's the mom who supposedly knew Mrs. Palin when she had her too-bull-ligation after Piper. And boy, did she have "something good for us."

Where are you ladies? I want you back. I want to hear more. I want all you Alaskans to tell us that you saw her pregnant, that you saw her no where near pregnant, that you know this, that, or the other thing. Just clue us in to life there and tell us why you think what you think. And perhaps allow commenters to ask you civil questions. Probe a little. I believe we can do that here.

Speaking of probing, I will be busy for the next two days taking care of my 50-year-old colonoscopy screen!  I suspect it will be a lot like working up the Palin pregnancy story, only with serious drugs on board. So help yourself to an open thread here. I'll be sipping my Gatorade G2 and will check in throughout the day.

Many thanks, Laura

Speaking of colonoscopies, I've had three so far (I started early because of family history of colon cancer). At my last colonoscopy, one of the nurses, who had a similar family background, said to me fervently, "NO ONE should die of colon cancer." And that's certainly true for those of us who have access to modern technological medicine. Congratulations on getting yours. It may not be a great deal of fun, but as the saying goes, "compared to what?" You DON'T want one possible alternative.

Yep, had two myself. Really no big deal. I think the worst is drinking the "salt" water the night before - yuck! My 24yr old son is having one on Thursday. He can't wait;)

I had a cousin just die a year ago from colon cancer at the age of 43. No one should die from it is right. She found out she had it July 4th when she was having pains on her right side. It was cancer in her liver that had spread from the colon. She made it almost a full year but it wasn't pretty.

Good luck & yes, I would love to hear from more people in Wasilla. I think it is odd that none of her friends have said they saw her. Isn't that odd? I know that my friends would have come out of the wood work just to support me.

Thanks to a kind reader for finding a typo. Corrected! I can't think well when I'm this hungry. And I don't think I've ever loved Jell-O as much as I did just now.

One of the things that I also find odd, Deb, is that none of Bristol's friends ever appeared on FB or MS to say that she was most certainly not pregnant. Instead, she kept switching schools. Now, that's ONE way to prove a teenager isn't pregnant (joke).

The story about Palin actually being pregnant, and trying to hide it out of ambivalence or shame, makes little sense, given that Palin and so many others had strong political motives for producing --in a most timely manner --a Down Syndrome Child to serve in a Madonna and Child tableau, custom-made for the GOP convention to rally the Base.

But, Palin -- at the time she was being considered for VP by the Fundamentalists/GOP in early 2007 -- had a bit of an abortion problem.

More than a few people in Wasilla and beyond had heard that she previously aborted one or more of her pregnancies (among other unsavory rumors).

And, in one previous political contest, Palin had actually been defeated by someone who was considered stronger on the all-important anti-abortion agenda.

Tri-G (it was hoped) would solve this possible deficit in Palin's resume and in the GOP ticket.

NeoCons and Fundies have a concept called "The Noble Lie" (see the work of Leo Strauss), and "Lying for Jesus" (see the work of David Barton) in which lies, even Very Big Political Lies, are justified if one believes they are being told for a higher political/ religious purpose. (see WMD in Iraq)

Tri-G was going to be the GOP's Big Lie of 2008.

And, so, Bill Kristol, Dick Morris, John Bolton, Michael Gerson, Fred Barnes, Rich Lowry, and a host of other NeoCon pundits and operatives headed for Alaska.

When the pundits arrived at Palin's house, in the summer of 2007, GOP dirty-trickster Dick Morris took Sarah aside for a VERY long conversation in which he discussed campaign tactics like how to appear to be a "maverick-y" Outsider.
(see Jane Mayer's piece in the October 27, 2008 New Yorker: "The Insiders: How John McCain Came to Pick Sarah Palin")

Some have referred to the Morris/Palin tete-a tete as a possible "Annunciation" scene in which Sarah is told about her "Mission from God" and/or the GOP, which would also help Israel and hasten End Times.

(Later, after her nomination, AIPAC came to instruct her, and Lieberman came to pray with her.)

This story goes well beyond the Palin family and their personal sordid family life. It extends into national and international politics and their unfortunate ties to religious extremism.

The main thing that glued me to babygate was what I read a very long time ago about what Sarah's parents had allegedly said in describing her.
(I'm paraphrasing). Mother(Sally):I wouldn't put anything past her. Father(Chuck):She was always good at not getting caught.

I have never set foot in Alaska , so I can't speak to the Palin pregnancy/tubal ligation issues specifically. But I have had two pregnancies resulting in two live births -- one a 7-month premie, one full term.

I'm 5'3,'' a runner (then), with a pre-pregnancy weight both times of around 118.

I looked much more like Demi Moore (from the waist down) than Sarah Palin before delivery in both cases.

In the perinatal work I've done since my children were born, I've seen hundreds of pregnant women about to deliver premies or post-partum after having premies. I've never seen anyone in this situation who has an abdomen as flat as Sarah has in this pictures and in the others that have survived the computer site scrubbing allegedly done by the McCain people around the time of the nomination.

It's hard to believe Palin is pregnant in these and other pictures dated to the time she was supposed to have been pregnant.

I guess what nails it for me is you can fake being pregnant, but you can't be pregnant and fake not being pregnant at 7 months, and you don't go up and down so drastically on a day-to-day basis, as Palin apparently did.

The stories of the"wild ride" and "birth" make absolutely no sense to anyone who has actually given birth, much less to anyone who has given birth to a premie, as has been previously discussed on this blog and others.

I really doubt that there is anyone who has actually looked at the evidence, even the people being paid to troll for Palin, who still believes her story.

Mhurka's comment reminds me of another Chuck Heath quote:
"She [Sarah] does what they tell her to."

Wonder who "they" might be?

I love seeing those two pics next to each other. It's such a blatant lie on Palin's part. Also, for all the women who have been pregnant, just try to picture yourself 7 to 8 mos pregnant, in heels running up steps or down them WITHOUT holding onto anything at all. I've been at that stage and can say it's practically impossible and any woman who cared about the status of her unborn child wouldn't risk such a thing. Now add the icy slush to the steps and you've got a clear pic of the type of activity that Palin was able to engage in while she was allegedly pregnant. She was NOT carrying a baby in her uterus in 2008.

So,Prof. Scharlott, I take it you are no longer Trignostic, though I understand why your paper needs to be.

I'm with Amy1. There's no explanation for the flat belly photo, other than Palin wasn't pregnant. And no one has come up with a single piece of evidence that can't fit within the fact that Palin wasn't pregnant.

Did you predict that Babygate would be accepted as truth by Oct. this year or just that Palin would be finished politically by then, especially after Joe's book?

Sure would be great if a few long-time Wasillans could shed new light on specific aspects of Palin's insanity.

For example: the grisly Mama's nutty, empathy-free response to Giffords' attack.

Funny how she succeeded in totally pulling focus from it being the SECOND time she'd incited violence.

Speaking of explore: B., the solution is very different and I am only now about to drink my first red syrupy portion. Only two small bottles but lots of starvation.

But here's where I'll leave my foggy thoughts for now: If Sarah had to save her reputation, why not save a Ds baby's life by adopting one? How heroic would that be? Unless it simply wasn't necessary because one was going to appear in the family.

I am Trignostic as well, but leaning ever so much more in a certain direction with every post I make and every comment I read. Thank you all!

I've lived in Wasilla since 1994 and have seen Palin once in line at the phone company. I don't know who she hung out with, but I certainly wasn't in that group. Come to think of it, do we ever hear from any of her "friends?" Maybe she doesn't have any. Anyway, some assume if a person is from Wasilla, or even Alaska in general, that they know the Palins. Not the case. And believe me, if I knew anything I would spill it in a heartbeat. I'm in the dark just like everyone else, just waiting until that wonderful day when someone finally brings her down.

B
5/9/2011 11:37:22 am

Why not adopt the DS baby rather than pretend to give birth? We wrestled with that on Audrey's blog.

Did she need Trig to be Todd's biological child to get free life-long Native American heath care?

Was it that Palin herself needed to claim to have "chosen life" rather than abortion?

Was it a political fear that people would fault her for adopting a special needs child while trying to handle four kids and run the state, whereas an accidental pregnancy wouldn't be seen as her choice?

Was she afraid that if she openly adopted a baby everyone would realize he was Bristol's baby because of the rumors that Bristol was pregnant?

We never figured it out. I doubt McGinniss has either.

Hi B - Well, I'm a social scientist and an historian. I just finished something that will soon be published in a history journal. I am trained to look at lots of evidence and weigh it and reach reasonable conclusions. I've been collecting evidence on this topic for quite a while. It's fair to say I'm 99.9 percent confident Sarah perpetrated a hoax. I'd bet Dunn has reached the same conclusion, but he had good reasons for not going that far in his book.

The pictures tell the story. Palin lied. What is so unbelievable is the support she gets from her fans. Do they not see how she abuses her kids? Do they not know how she treats her employees? Do they not see that she has done NOTHING with her millions and millions of dollars, in fact, she takes money from startups that are trying to help special kids. She is ruthless, mean, arrogant, and unbalanced. And they still are convinced she will be President...maybe of her knitting class in the mental hospital...

It boiled down to "production values" for the Madonna and Child Tableau needed to boost McCain's candidacy. ( The choice of Palin as VP was often aptly described as the GOP's "Hail Mary" pass.)

For this Tableau, Palin needed to be the biological mother of a prenatally-diagnosed, disabled child. Sarah needed to have Personally Struggled and Chosen Life!

An adoption just wouldn't have had the power that Sarah as a biological "Madonna" had. This was a "Morality Play," and it needed all the right Mythic elements to resonate with the Base and get them to the polls.

The baby couldn't have been just ANY disabled child either.

Only a prenatally-diagnosable condition would do. The condition had to be easily recognizable at birth. It had to be a condition that was well known to the public and somewhat photogenic. (No FAS babies need apply.)

That meant obtaining a relatively high-functioning Down Syndrome infant.

Tri-G (and other infants or dolls who may have been sharing the role) is utterly scripted. It's amazing, isn't it, how he has always been asleep or utterly docile in public?

And, of course, if the details of the Tableau were to be called into serious doubt, Palin could always fall back on the story that she was merely covering up for Bristol. And the MSM would not dare to dig any deeper.

I don't blame you, Laura, if you don't want to hear my scare story that happened after my colonoscopy in February...

I'm going to tell it anyway.

I had a whole cascade of problems dating back to a simple cold nearly a year ago, in June 2010. I got a sinus infection, and took antibiotics for it.

I didn't know it, but the antibiotics killed what's called normal flora (bacteria) in my intestine and colon, and I became toxic and anemic from an overgrowth of Clostridium dificil. I was very weak and very short of breath. In December 2010 I was hospitalized for severe anemia and low blood pressure, and got 4 units of blood. Stress diabetes was another diagnosis.

All was better through January, so the docs scheduled a colonoscopy to find the cause of the anemia, because nothing obvious was found. It was done in early February, and 2 day after the procedure I began feeling weak and short of breath again.

The doctor suggested a CT scan, and I said I didn't think I could even walk the distance from the parking lot to the lab, so he admitted me. Turned out I had multiple (many!) pulmonary emboli -- evidently none of them large enough to kill me right away.

I'll never know if the colonoscopy and my previous condition were related to the PEs, but it was scary. I'll be on blood thinners for another couple of months at least.

Lesson: Just like they advise on long plane flights, get up and move around after your exam, don't sit at your computer blogging!

Laura, I have already told Brad that tho I have lived near Wasilla for nearly 30 years, I have no first hand knowledge of anything palin, except the political. If I knew anything, I would be only too happy to tell the world.

What I can give is a perspective of the area from a resident who does NOT like the local politics/law enforcement. The women who commented on the 'toobull' and possible 'witeouts' on a blog comments section may very well know the truth. BUT, you must understand their reluctance to come out with what they know. The fear of the 'palin mafia' is alive and well in this town/state. If they have jobs and kids, they must first protect their families. We continue to wonder about some very strange goings on that were glossed over and/or buried by the police. One of those things was the strange and untimely death of a nurse.

The APD (Anchorage police dept) issued LIES to the Nat Enquirer (at the direction of palin's lawyer) about the Todd/Shailey Tripp (prostitution) events. Look what happened to Walt Monegan for not following the explicit directions from $P to fire her ex-brother-in-law, Wooten (troopergate).

Joe McGinniss lived in this town for a while, and I am sure he will be writing about the very strange atmosphere here. In addition to those who may be afraid to tell the truth about palin, the streets here run bright GOP red. Some would do anything to protect their Queen Ester.

Kim Chatman, the gal who filed the ethics complaint about the 'legal defense fund' (can we say slush fund?), one of the few that was not dismissed by the personnel board (that had 'at will' board members - yeah, the governor appoints the people who are supposed to be watching for violations in the executive branch); says she was right next to $arah soon after she announced her 7 month "pregnancy" and says she definitely was not pregnant. Kim is currently out of state (actually out of country).

IMO, those who would tell don't know, and those who know are afraid to tell.

V
5/9/2011 08:07:48 pm

Laura: I hope that everything goes, or has gone all right.

B: Why would Sarah choose to be pregnant rather than obviously adopt? For the reasons you mentioned. Also. But also because it brought the attention to her. Fertile woman despite being in her 40s. A woman who can do lots of other things despite being pregnant and/or giving birth (so easy when you're not really pregnant and/or in labor). Makes her hotter than ever. I also think she enjoyed the whole charade.

Frostyin AK: people may know but not have proof. For example, Tripp supposedly massaged $P when she was 6 months along - and noticed nothing. That's evidence, but not proof - and evidence that is tainted because Tripp was apparently having sex with Todd. Same with the touball litigation. A friend may have heard $P talking about it - but again, that's evidence, not proof.

Frustrating!

I was intrigued by Bobcat Logic and the GOP's Big Lie - what other Big Lies have been perpetrated?

On the concept of BIG LIES, the late historian Howard Zinn wrote that there were two that the American public was inculcated with in school and through the media, which prevent understanding of what happens as long as they are believed.

One is that the United States always acts for benevolent purposes is the world, instead of for the national self-interest. This is related to the second big lie - that there is no class conflict in the U.S. If so, then the "national interest" is synonymous with what benefits the big corporations. Eisenhower, in his Farewell Address, spoke of the "military industrial complex." The first draft of the speech used the more informative phrase "the military industrial congressional complex." I've updated it, with a nifty acronym, which you are welcome to use - the Military Industrial Congressional Financial Corporate Media Complex - MICFiC, for short (notice that the second i is NOT capitalized - this makes it more fun to write on signs).

While we're speaking about the grand sweep of history, we could mention that the conquest of the western hemisphere by Europeans was accomplished with near-total genocide of the indigenous population, and the daily institutionalized violence of slavery of Africans and their descendants - but it's too nice a day to dwell on that.

Just read the story about the pastor who claimed to be a Navy SEAL for many years - turns out he took his plot from a movie. The Palin story has many similarities - religious/political leader - gullible public taught not to question - plot lifted from the screen (in Palin's case Desperate Housewives). Both involve cases of severe narcissism.

I recently heard on the news a very interesting story about the manner in which bin Laden's wives are being interrogated by the Pakistani government. It seems that over the course of several days the wives were given the same questionnaire to fill out each day. However, the order of the questions were changed each day. The thinking was that it would be easier to remember the truth versus any lie. (i.e. it is more difficult to keep one's lies straight).
I immediately thought of Palin and the "wild ride" story. It seems that with each retelling there was a bit of a change. The biggest change ,if I remember correctly, being the town/city where Trig was born. Certainly somethin' to think about.

5/10/2011 06:30:52 am

To Bobcat Logic,

I laughed at the thought of Dick Morris as Palin's Annunciation angel. I think Dick's interest in Palin was motivated by his hatred for Hillary Clinton, not by any great love of pro-life policies. Morris published a book arguing that Condi Rice was the only person capable of beating Hillary. And when Condi didn't run, Morris tried to give Obama advice on beating Clinton.

I'm curious about Franklin Graham's role in Palin's career. He has known her a long time, has a lot history/ties to the AK evangelical community, and he advised McCain on the evangelical vote. He spoke at least one of her Governor's prayer breakfasts in early 2008. The Washington Post reported that he called her at the Republican convention. The rest of the GOP king-makers have moved on but Franklin Graham still seems invested in her. They also seem to share the same gentle, Christ-like attitude towards Obama. ;-)

If Palin needed advice about how to spin a family pregnancy in a presidential election, I think she might have sought out Graham's advice. Or if GOP king-makers thought Palin needed an "Annunciation" angel I think Graham would have been a better choice than a cousin of Roy Cohn.

@ V -- GOP Big Lies? Where to start, where to end?

Here are a few:

1) Trickle-Down Economics

2) Global Warning is a Scientific "Hoax"

3) Yellow Cake Uranium (WMD) as justification for Iraq War
(see recent, excellent, film on this: "Fair Game")

The Death of Pat Tillman in "enemy" fire

Virtually all the facts surrounding the capture and release of Jessica Lynch

Obama not a real citizen

Death Panels are established in Obama's health care plan

etc.,etc,.ad nauseum

Much of the GOP lying has, directly or indirectly, involved the religious right (see Jeff Sharlett's "The Family"; and Max Blumenthal's "Republican Gomorrah")...

which takes us to Franklin Graham...
You can almost bet on his involvement with Palin's Pregnancy Hoax.

Another interesting thread to be explored:
" Paxon" as one of Trig-'s middle names.

Do a Google Search using "Paxson and McCain" Very Interesting stuff!

I know the Palins have claimed that Tri-G was named after one of their favorite "snow machine" locales. Maybe.

But what a coincidence!

And Sarah says she doesn't believe in coincidences. Maybe we shouldn't either. Is Palin's pregnancy story just a "snow-job," financed by a major Fundie/GOP "snow-machine"?

Someone should enlist pregnant women to take photos of themselves in a suit with pencil skirt and scarf like Sarah is wearing in that photo, and see if they can look not pregnant! And if they are daring enough, post their unsuccessful attempts to even fit into a pencil skirt, ie skirt unzipped and stuck under the belly. Or if they somehow managed to get the skirt on, a description of what they had to do to squeeze in. And the picture so we can see if they can hide the belly with a scarf!

Dear Curiouser: Well, I can't attain 100 percent certainty without affirmative proof. The totality of all I know brings me to 99.9 percent - not easy to boil that down in a few sentences. My "Spiral of Silence" paper gives much of that, but I left out a fair amount - it would take a book to adequately cover all the evidence.

I'm a healthcare lawyer and have been following this story since the beginning.

The minute I read Dr. Cathy Baldwin-Johnson's letter when it was released back in 2008, it jumped out at me that she had discussed leaving the staff at Mat-Su. I found it beyond bizarre that she wrote about her own career in a letter that purportedly had to do with Sarah Palin.

Plus, there were comments on Palin Deceptions, a blog about the pregnancy (and a blog that I have no doubt that Palin or her people were following closely) that Dr. Cathy Baldwin-Johnson was the only doctor in her practice who did not have active staff privileges at Mat-Su and that it was strange that suddenly Dr. Baldwin-Johnson was no longer on staff at her local hospital where she had been on staff for years and years.

When Dr. Baldwin-Johnson commented on her staff privileges in her doctor's letter, I always thought it was in reaction to the comments on Palin Deceptions.
